Three Americans stranded in Yemen have been air-lifted out of the war-torn country and transported to Oman, Reuters reported, citing an Omani foreign minstry statement.
According to Oman's state news agency ONA, the Americans were flown out of Houthi-controlled Sana'a by the Omani air force late Wednesday. A Yemeni security official told Reuters the three had been detained.
“The three Americans were detained by the security forces run by Al Houthis and were held on suspicion of spying,” the official told Reuters over the phone from Sana’a.
Earlier this month, the US State Department said one US citizen had died in the custody of Houthi militants after arriving from Djibouti to conduct work for the UN.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen between Houthi militants and forces loyal to ousted President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition has killed more than 2,500 civilians and left the country with a humanitarian crisis.
