Three young girls and an elderly man have died in Syria in the past day because of the severe cold spill that has hit the country, AFP has reported.

One of the girls was less than two days old and died in Firdous, a southern district of Aleppo. She passed away due to “the extreme cold”, according to Rami Abdul Rahman, director at the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

A one-year old girl was also reported dead in southern Damascus. The third female child died as a result of the low temperatures in the town of Deir Al Asafir, east Damascus.

The SOHR, which documents deaths in the war-torn country, stated that an elderly man also died in the bitterly cold weather and because he didn’t have heating in his house. The man was from the Mghayir district of Aleppo.

The total number of people who have died due to the cold weather has now reached six since last Wednesday. Those who died all lived in rebel-held areas, where there is a lack of food, heating and medical equipment.

Outside of Syria, thousands of Syrian refugees are struggling with the cold winter weather. Many have been left with inadequate shelter, with some dying due to plunging temperatures.
