Tremors in Morocco cause anxiety and fear

Published December 12th, 2004 - 11:20 GMT

Since last Thursday, the Nador province in Morocco has felt a series of tremors and minor earthquakes that register between 3 and 5 degrees on the Richter scale. So far, there have been no victims but the Moroccan press contains many reports about fear, especially because neighboring Algeria has also been hit by a series of minor earthquakes over the past month.

The most serious tremor was felt on Thursday in Nador, Laaroui and Selouane. Many people in the risk zones have set up tents because they fear being trapped in collapsed buildings. Some buildings in the Nador area suffered from slight cracks. There are some reports of efforts to strengthen at-risk buildings.
