Tunisia marks World Day against Illiteracy

Organized within the framework of the World Day against Illiteracy, which is celebrated every year on September 8, a national education program has been launched to fight against illiteracy in Tunisia. La Presse reports that as of 2004, the illiteracy rate in Tunisia was 22.9%. Salem El Mekki, the general coordinator of the program in Tunisia said that the aim is to decrease the rate of illiteracy to less than 10% in a national program that will cover 2005-2009.
