Turkey and the US have agreed “in principle” to provide air support to Syrian opposition forces, the country's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told Reuters Monday.
The air support would protect Syrian rebels trained in a US-sponsored program on Turkish territory, in an effort to send the forces back to Syria to combat Daesh militants, the foreign minister said.
“They have to be supported via air. If you do not protect them or provide air support, what is the point?” Cavusoglu told Daily Sabah.
US officials provided no immediate comment on the statement.
Washington so far has refrained from enforcing a “safe zone” for Syrian opposition forces, as this could be interpreted as declaring war on the Syrian state.
