Police in Iran have dismantled two prostitution rings in central and southern Iran, arresting 33 people including 25 women, Kayhan newspaper reported Tuesday.

Six men and 21 women were detained in one of the prostitution rings located in Najafabad, close to Isfahan in the center of the republic, the paper added.

The second ring in the southern city of Shiraz was led by a 30-year-old woman, known as "Mobile Maryam" because she contacted her clients using a mobile phone. During the police crackdown in Shiraz, Maryam, three other young women and two men were arrested, Kayhan added.

Meanwhile, a high-level welfare official said last month that Iran now had 300,000 prostitutes and warned that their number would increase rapidly if poor living conditions persisted. (Albawaba.com)
