Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, emphasized Sunday that the UAE would be among the countries to play a leading role in Afghanistan’s reconstruction. Hamdan voiced these remarks after convening with Vice-President and Defense Minister of Afghanistan’s new interim government, General Mohammed Fahim.

Hamdan expressed the hope that “peace and stability” would be restored in the war-stricken country. According to Khaleej Times, Hamdan added that he would like to see Afghanistan recover from the damages of two long decades of war.

Hamdan and the Afghan Vice President spoke about the situation in Afghanistan and various ways of boosting the relations between the two countries. General Fahim, on his part, stated that he felt the UAE was serious about extending aid to his country and its people. Fahim also praised UAE President Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for providing humanitarian help to the people of Afghanistan, and added that the UAE had always played a constructive role in supporting them.
