The United Arab Emirate opened today the 2000 E-Commerce Exhibition and Conference with the goal of attracting leading foreign high-tech companies who can help Dubai transform its traditional commerce to e-commerce.
The three-day event is also designed to promote commercial activity in Dubai as part of the government's strategic plan and position Dubai as the regional telecommunications and trade center.
The event organizer, Ain Saqir Co., urged the government to adopt legal amendments that would facilitate the use of credit cards and indirect purchases.
The value of all transactions in the Arab world via the Internet in 1998 totaled an estimated $20 million. It is projected that in a few years that number will jump to $1 billion a year.
