Agence France Presse reported Thursday that UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon confirmed Staffan de Mistura as the new UN Special Envoy to Syria.
The Italian-Swedish diplomat will replace Lakhdar Brahimi who resigned from the post in April after failed rounds of peace talks and Syrian President Bashar Al Assad's re-election bid announcement.
Ban said he "consulted broadly" before confirming de Mistura's appointment, including consultations with Syrian authorities and the Arab League.
"The special envoy will provide good offices aimed at bringing an end to all violence and human rights violations and promoting a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis," Ban told reporters.
