Twenty-one militants have been killed by Tunisian security forces following an attack on police and army posts near the Libyan border on Monday. The incident escalated into a shootout in which four civilians were killed, according to reports provided by government officials.

"Police and army units killed 21 [extremists] and captured six after police and National Guard posts as well as an army barracks in Ben Guerdane were targeted in coordinated attacks by armed terrorist groups," the defence and interior ministries said in a joint statement.

The statement added that four civilians were also killed in the fighting, and specified that the death toll was preliminary.
