In keeping with its spirit of global volunteerism, UPS (NYSE:UPS) has shipped more than seven tons of relief materials to victims of the recent earthquake in Pakistan. Tents, sleeping bags, gas heaters, and clothing were collected by UPS UAE L.L.C. and delivered to the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Earthquake Relief Cell.
“Given the proximity of the UAE to areas devastated by the recent earthquake, not to mention the large number of Southeast Asians among UPS’ customer base in the UAE, UPS was committed to mobilizing our resources here to assist in relief efforts,” said John Tansey, General Manager for UPS UAE.
“The media coverage of the extreme winter conditions in the areas affected by the earthquake has convinced us that the several tons of tents and heaters collected by UPS will be put to immediate use,” he added.
UPS UAE managed the collection of donated relief materials at points throughout the country, then centralized and packaged the more than seven ton shipment before overseeing its delivery to Pakistan.
UPS UAE coordinates a number of corporate social responsibility efforts throughout the year, culminating in its participation in UPS’s annual Global Volunteer Week (GVW). In late 2005, more than 45 UPS volunteers took part in local GVW activities, staging a full day of clean-up operations on the Jumeirah Beach coastline, which included removing rubbish and enhancing the overall environment of one of Dubai’s most popular tourist destinations.
