ALBAWABA - In a move that has ignited widespread international criticism, the United States exercised its veto power at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), derailing a crucial resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

Despite receiving support from 13 member states, the resolution faced rejection due to the U.S.'s permanent seat status, prompting reactions from nations including Turkey, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Malta.

The resolution, backed by over 80 countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, was vetoed by the U.S. during an emergency session of the UNSC. While the U.K. opted to abstain, the other 13 members voted affirmatively. The resolution underscored the need for all parties to adhere to international law, particularly in safeguarding civilian lives, and stressed the urgency of releasing detainees and ensuring access to humanitarian aid.

Hakan Fidan, Turkey's Foreign Minister, provided the initial official response, underscoring the growing isolation of the U.S. on the Gaza matter. Fidan observed that the U.S. political system seems increasingly incapacitated in issues related to Israeli occupation, allowing the Israeli occupation to act with impunity and persist in its oppressive measures.

Switzerland, Slovenia, and Malta expressed their disappointment with the veto, emphasizing the critical necessity of a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. These nations called for measures that protect Israel's security rights while endorsing a temporary "humanitarian pause."

Following the veto, Riyad Mansur, Palestine's Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered an impassioned speech, deeming it a "dreadful day" for the Security Council. Mansur pledged to explore all legitimate avenues to halt the atrocities, highlighting the Security Council's failure to fulfill its responsibilities amid a severe crisis threatening global and regional peace and security.
