US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis arrived in Baghdad on Monday on an unannounced official visit, state television Al-Iraqiya reported.

His surprise visit comes one day after US-backed Iraqi forces began their offensive to dislodge the extremist Daesh militia from the western part of the city of Mosul, its last key stronghold in the country.
