Reuters reported Wednesday that the United States expressed opposition against Egypt's recent decision to sentence 529 Muslim Brotherhood members to the death sentence.
In a briefing held by U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, the U.S.' stance on the situation was described as "unconscionable."
"Imposing the death penalty on 529 defendants after a two-day trial would be unconscionable," said Harf.
Harf also added in her commentary that Washington is still in the process of reviewing its current aid policy to Egypt after it pulled most of its funding from Cairo in late 2013, forcing Egypt to turn to its Gulf neighbors to fill the critical aid gap.
This latest Brotherhood sentence ruling may thus throw the current aid review into another state of jeopardy for Cairo.
