U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was in Jordan Wednesday and Thursday, meeting Arab League officials and conducting talks with Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas.
Mr Kerry and Mr Abbas "continued the conversation they have been having for the last few months and touched on recent developments in the region", a State department statement said.
The two men held talks for five hours in a luxurious Amman hotel, following an iftar meal to break the Ramadan fast, the AFP reported.
A high-ranking Palestinian official, requesting anonymity, told the AFP that "progress" had been made, with Mr Kerry "determined to announce, before he leaves on Friday, a restart of negotiations", referring to the raw political relationship between Israelis and Palestinians.
The Palestinian official said the two men also discussed "details of an economic plan that would bolster the Palestinian economy".
This will have been Mr Kerry's sixth visit to the Middle East, as he pursues his mission to
make dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis.
