ALBAWABA - The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported an "Iranian-backed Militants Attack Al-Asad Airbase" resulting in the injuries of several U.S. personnel and at least one Iraqi service member.
In a post on X, CENTCOM said that multiple ballistic missiles and rockets were launched by Iranian-backed militants in Western Iraq targeting al-Assad Airbase with damage assessment still ongoing.
"Most of the missiles were intercepted by the base’s air defense systems while others impacted on the base. A number of U.S. personnel are undergoing evaluation for traumatic brain injuries. At least one Iraqi service member was wounded." the post said.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed the attack following reports of a barrack of ballistic missiles targeting Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq, which hosts American forces.
This attack was after an Israeli airstrike that killed five officers of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) in Damascus, including Hojjatollah Omidvar or Hajj Sadegh, a senior Quds Force general, and a senior intelligence officer.
"Initial reports indicated that the base was hit by ballistic missiles but left open the possibility the base was hit by rockets," an official spoke in anonymity to Reuters.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanaani condemned the airstrike in Damascus blamed on Israel saying the Islamic Republic reserves the right to respond to Israel "in an appropriate time and place".
