ALBAWABA - According to Al Arabiyah, a man assaulted worshippers inside a mosque in the Al-Rusaifa neighborhood of the Zarqa Governorate in a troubling incident that was caught on camera and extensively shared on social media in Jordan.
The attacker, who has now been captured, is said to have mental health concerns, according to remarks made to Al Arabiya by Colonel Amer Al-Sartawi, the spokesperson for the Jordanian Public Security Directorate. He disclosed that the event happened on Wednesday of last week.
Al-Sartawi described the attack in detail to Al Arabiyah, revealing that the attacker entered the Sahaba Mosque during the evening prayer and attacked four worshippers with a sharp object, inflicting minor wounds.
Al-Sartawi guaranteed that the wounded people were sent to the hospital right away and are now in stable condition. Security agencies have started looking into the situation right away in the interim.
The video showed the attacker brandishing a knife while the worshippers were in a state of terror. After the initial shock, a few people in the mosque were able to protect themselves with chairs and resist, which eventually led to the attacker being subdued.
After the video went viral, Jordan declared he was going to fight against the illegal drug trade, calling it a "war on the devil's drug."
Witnesses described how the attacker, who was not a local, showed unprovoked signs of irritation and targeted the imam of the mosque.
