At least 21 members of the Republican Guard were killed in Saturday's suicide bombing attack at the entrance of the presidential palace in Moukalla, southeastern Yemen, said a doctor in the town. "The bodies of twenty soldiers were left at the mortuary and there are many injured," he told AFP.
This attack came as the new head of state had just been sworn in in the capital, Sanaa. Abed Rabo Mansour Hadi succeeded Saturday Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen's president for 33 years, through a transfer of power agreement signed after more than a year of protests against the regime.
Mansour took the oath before Parliament, vowing to preserve the country's unity, independence and integrity. During the presidential elections, he was the only candidate and garnered the support of 99.8% of voters.
