French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Monday that he has evidence that jihadist militants belonging to ISIL have sold oil to the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, AFP reports.

“We have proofs that when ISIL has taken over oil it has sold oil to the Assad regime,” Fabius asserted during a news conference in New Dehli.

Fabius’ claim illustrates the complicated nature of the current conflict in Iraq and Syria.

Over the weekend, the ISIL declared an Islamist state over large swathes of Iraq and Syria, according to AFP.

“Officially they are combating each other but in fact they are very often helping each other," Fabius added.
