Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday said that "popular resistance" is the legitimate right of the Palestinian people under international conventions and international law. Speaking after his meeting with George Mitchell, the American envoy to the Middle East, he said: "The Israelis must pay attention not to drag us to what we don't love and accept, and what they do not like and pleased with."

He described the recent killing of four Palestinians in the area of Nablus as "a very serious matter," demanding the Israeli authorities not to repeat such attacks against the Palestinian people "how does not do something more than its right of popular resistance, which is secured within the international legitimacy."

Abbas said that "the Israeli government should stop the settlers who are wreaking havoc, attacking Palestinian civilians and lands, cutting down the trees and beating people. Then, the Israeli army comes to protect them," he said, emphasizing that this is not possible or the Palestinians are likely to accept it.

Abu Mazen added after the meeting: "Today we met with Mitchell, and there was an in-depth and good talks. We expect to get answers in the coming days. We hope to see a commitment to the provisions of the Quartet statement in full, and this is what we seek."

Abbas mentioned that the Quartet issued a statement on Friday demanding an important implementation. The statement stressed the obligation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to implement the articles included in the statement.

The Palestinian leader stated that the Israeli attacks and provocations are still continuing but despite all of this, the Palestinian people is under control. Abbas noted that his Authority is trying to control the situation, but the Israeli government must stop all the steps that will provoke anger in violation of international legitimacy. He added: "This is very clear as stated in the statement of the Quartet; these acts are contrary to international legitimacy, and thus on Israel to cease its them. "
