ALBAWABA - The Egyptian community was in shock after several Facebook accounts offered to sell children in exchange for money.

Over the past few days, some Facebook pages and accounts sparked anger in Cairo after offering to "sell children", prompting Egyptian authorities to take action to immediately stop people behind the accounts.

On Monday, Sahar El-Senbaty, head of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood in Egypt, referred the case to the Child Protection Office affiliated with the Office of the Attorney General, to hold those involved accountable.

On the other hand, Sabry Othman, Director General of Child Rescue Administration in Egypt, explained that "a group of people placed their kids up for sale because they don't have money."

He also noted children's prices varied, highlighting that a child could range between 3,000 to 5,000 Egyptian pounds (around $59 to $98).

Othman also pointed out that this incident constitutes a human trafficking crime punishable by Law No. 64 of 2010, with a penalty that may reach life imprisonment and a fine of no less than 100,000 pounds (about $1,974).

Meanwhile, some social media accounts suggested that people who "buy children" could end up taking their organs and selling them.
