On Monday it seemed that there was little hope of a compromise over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a controversial project that Sudan and Egypt argue will severely threaten their water supplies.
Ethiopia is hoping the dam will turn the country into a major electricity exporter, revenues that could help to bring a large portion of its population of over 100m people out of poverty. However, Egypt and Sudan rely on the Nile for their main water source, something the building of the
