A women’s marathon will be organized for the first time in Al-Ahsa to mark “Pink Day,” which coincides with International Women’s Day, on Thursday.

The marathon is a part of various activities that will be organized for women in Al-Ahsa in an attempt to create awareness on the importance of physical exercises and also on breast cancer.

The activities will be launched on Gulf International Road next to the Saudi Electronic University, and will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., local media reported on Wednesday.

Nisreen Al-Hammad, chairperson of Zahrat Al-Sultan Charitable Society for Breast Cancer, was quoted as saying that the activities come within the initiatives of the society and are the first of their kind in the Kingdom.

The program is aimed at educating women about the importance of sports, She said, adding that regular exercise and good health can help protect women against cancer by up to 40 percent.

“Women have the right to practice sports and take care of themselves,” she said, adding the proceeds from the marathon and other activities will be used to purchase medical equipment for breast cancer patients.

Lulwa Al-Hammad, a member of the society, called on women to participate in the program.

Amani Al-Arfaj, another member of the society, said that there would also be seminars in English, so that all women can take part freely and without hindrance.

The 30-minute marathon will be for two age groups — seven to 14 years and 15 years and above.
