The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) on Monday expressed concern around the diplomatic crisis of Qatar with its Gulf region neighbours, saying that politics and sport must be separate.
"ANOC today expressed its hope that the international sports movement in Qatar would not be endangered by the geopolitical situation in the Gulf region," a statement of the Swiss-based organization said.
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Yemen severed diplomatic ties and closed borders with Qatar two weeks ago over alleged support for terrorism. Other Arab countries have followed suit.
Doha has repeatedly denied the accusations.
Qatar has hosted big sports events in recent years, as well last last year's ANOC assembly. Future events in the country include the world athletics championships 2019 and the 2022 football World Cup.
ANOC named the Olympic Committees of Qatar and the other countries in the region "valuable partners to the world's Olympic Movement" and said "sport has also played a key role in opening up the region to the world.
"ANOC sincerely hopes that the geopolitical situation regarding Qatar will be resolved soon and that it won't impact on the incredible value that Qatar brings to the sports world.
"Sport must be separate from politics in this Gulf issue. The development of sport is very important to the people of the region."
