Seeds comfortably pounded lightweight opposition on Wednesday at the Dubai Tennis Championships, with third Tomas Berdych beating Italian qualifier Thomas Fabbiano 6-2, 6-2 to next face unpredictable Nick Kyrgios.

Berdych, the third seed and twice a finalist at the Aviation Club, was untroubled in his match but was already looking ahead of his third clash since the start of the year with Marseille champion Kyrgios.

Unseeded Australian Kyrgios won his second match since arriving in Dubai only on Tuesday as he defeated Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 6-2 for a seventh win in a row.

"He's full of fireworks on the court - in a good way. He's playing really aggressive. He's going for a lot of shots, risking a lot," Berdych, who beat the 20-year-old Australian in Melbourne last month but lost to him in France four days ago, said.

"For me it's going to be a big challenge. I have a lot of revenge to get back after last week. I must refocus myself, try to raise the game, and play some good tennis again."

Spain's number four Roberto Bautista Agut remained the man to beat in 2016 after notching up his 16th win of the season as he dispatched South Korean teenager Chung Hyeon 6-0, 6-1.

Top seed Novak Djokovic and number two Stan Wawrika were playing for the quarters later against underdog opponents.

Top seed Djokovic was to face Tunisian number 121 Malek Jaziri of Tunisia; second seed Wawrinka, who struggled in his opening win over Sergiy Stakhovsky, had a match against a Croatian qualifier, Franko Skugor, ranked 188th,

Bautista Agut, twice a 2016 title-winner, advanced into a contest with Marcos Baghdatis, who put out Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 6-2.

Bautista Agut, ranked 18th, is braced for the day when his form inevitably suffers a dip.

"I have to be humble and know that to keep winning like this, it's impossible. It's good to win like this, playing well and doing everything you practise for.

"For every win you must work a lot, play for two hours. I'm happy because I won fast today (54 minutes) but I know it's gonna be tougher and tougher."

Sixth seed Feliciano Lopez beating Czech Lukas Rosol 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) while German Philipp Kohlschreiber, seeded eighth, defeated Croatian teen Borna Coric 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
