Chelsea Transfer News: Barcelona Hint at a Summer Move for David Luiz

David Luiz' future at Chelsea has been speculated a lot since the summer. The Brazilian was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in the summer with reports suggesting that the Catalan club were ready to pay as much as £35 million for the defender. However, Chelsea did not entertain any bids for the player and he ended up staying at Stamford Bridge. Just as he looked set for a summer without transfer rumours, Barcelona’s captain Carlos Puyol announced his exit from the club at the end of the season.

The talismanic defender will be a major miss for the club and their vice-president Javier Faus has confirmed that there will be high-profile signings in the summer. According to the Mirror, he said:

"We will be making some big investments in the transfer market this summer. Our financial situation will not be an obstacle."

"We are ready just like we will be ready in the future. The club's main priority will always be to maintain sporting excellence.

Barcelona have made substantial investments to their attacking powers over the last few years. The arrivals of Cesc Fabregas, Alexis Sanchez, and Neymar for figures in excess of £35 million each makes the club one of the strongest in this department. However, the same cannot be said of their defence where Javier Mascherano – a midfielder by trade – continues to partner Gerard Pique in Puyol’s absence.

Last season, Luiz was a first-team regular ahead of John Terry. He forged a great partnership with Gary Cahill, but this season has been tough for the Brazilian. His transfer value has dropped considerably, as he has played little football under Jose Mourinho. Even when he has done, it has been in a number of positions. Barcelona are thought to value him at around £25 million, which is roughly the same figure Chelsea paid to Benfica for his transfer in 2011.

Mourinho has been reluctant to sell his players to Barcelona, but FFP may force him to sell a player, who is largely underutilised in the squad.
