World number one Novak Djokovic moved ahead for the first time in his long-running rivalry with Rafael Nadal after he defeated the latter to clinch the Qatar Open title.

The Serbian defeated the Spaniard 6-1, 6-2 in the match that lasted for an hour, to claim his first title of the year, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The 28-year-old continued his recent dominance of the 14-time Grand Slam winner with a ninth victory in 10 meetings - the last five in straight sets.

The world number one had dominated 2015, winning three of the year's four grand slams, and he already looks in the groove in the build-up to this month's Australian Open.
