Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Saeb Erekat, said on Wednesday that Argentina has triumphed for international law when it canceled its pre-World Cup friendly match with the Israeli football team.
“The world will not surrender to the Israeli government’s state terrorism, blackmail, threats and intimidation, which is supported by the administration of US President Donald Trump,” said Erekat in a statement.
Responding to remarks by Israeli Minister of Culture Miri Regev in which she said that she hopes “Argentina will not surrender to the threats of terrorism and will not cancel its game with Israel," Erekat said that "the international community will not surrender to the Israeli government's practices and crimes against the Palestinian people, and that Israel should be punished, not rewarded, for killing peaceful Palestinian protesters, including children and women.”
He expressed gratitude to Argentina, its people and its football team for “triumphing for international law and standing against the bullying, threats and blackmail,” from Israeli and American officials such as Regev, the US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, and US ambassador the United Nations, Nikki Haley.
The Argentine Football Association canceled on Tuesday its match with Israel planned to be played in Jerusalem on Saturday as a result of the efforts of the Palestinian Football Association and its chairman Jibril Rjoub with the help of regional and international sports federations.
