The Fenerbahce football club on Sunday called for league games in Turkey to be postponed following an attack by an unknown gunman on the team's bus which caused serious injuries to the driver though no players were hurt.

On its website, the team described the incident on Saturday night as an "organized and planned armed attack," adding that league games should be put on hold until authorities solve the case.

The bus came under fire in the city of Trabzon after Fenerbahce won 5-1 over nearby Caykur Rizespor.

No arrests have yet been made in the case. The players were all taken to a local airport and flown back to Istanbul where they were met by team officials and fans.

Fenerbahce's board of directors was set to meet on Monday in an extraordinary session.

The Dogan news agency quoted Trabzon Governor Abdil Celil Oz as saying two shots were fired at the bus from a large caliber hunting rifle.

Turkish media outlets pointed to the strong rivalry between Fenerbahce and local team Trabzonspor.

In 2011, Fenerbahce was implicated in a match-fixing scandal that led to the team being sanctioned by UEFA, including a ban on participating in the next Champions' League season.

Trabzonspor fans felt they should win the Turkish cup. So far, Fenerbahce has retained the title.
