Golf’s world number one Jordan Spieth has arrived at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship brimming with confidence and ready to continue his stunning start to the season.

In red-hot form following his eight-shot victory at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii earlier this month, Spieth says he’s fresh and ready to challenge the classy line-up in the Gulf Swing opener which is owned by Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

“I feel great,” said Spieth, speaking to media ahead of his Abu Dhabi debut. “I came home from Hawaii, took a couple days off, went and saw my instructor, and I actually feel better about the way I’m striking my irons coming into this week than I did going into Hawaii.”

Twenty-two-year-old Spieth joins an elite field for the region’s showpiece tournament that includes four of the world’s top six players. Rory McIlroy, world number three and a four-time runner-up in Abu Dhabi, American compatriot and world number six Rickie Fowler and world number five, the Super Swede Henrik Stenson, a former UAE resident who’s also been a runner-up for Falcon Trophy honors.

McIlroy admitted he loves to tee-off his season in Abu Dhabi, and has been paired in a glittering three-ball opening round with Spieth and Fowler, who returns for his second consecutive year.

“To tee up alongside those guys, there’s excitement, there’s a buzz about it,” said McIlroy. “You’re teeing off the first round of your season and it feels like you’re right into the thick of things at the start.”

The competitiveness between the superstar trio started in earnest this week when they ‘raced’ into Abu Dhabi and took part in the GolfBoarding ‘Rider Cup’ challenge at the emirate’s ocean-front Saadiyat Beach Golf Club.

GolfBoarding has taken golf by storm in the US over the past year, and McIlroy, partnered by Stenson for ‘Team Europe’ quickly shifted into gear after the holiday season against the Americans.

“It was actually quite competitive,” said McIlroy. “When we actually needed to race, we all put it to high. Actually, Jordan nearly took me out! We collided halfway down the fairway. Thankfully I didn’t fall off. It was really good fun. It was a nice way to start the week.”

The competitive rivalry continues early morning Thursday, when Spieth, McIlroy and Fowler tee off together at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, starting at 7.40 a.m.
