European heavyweights Real Madrid, AC Milan and Valencia will join five Dubai clubs at the Fifth Hamdan Bin Mohammad Under-18 International Football Tournament to be held at the Dubai Police Officers Club from April 10 to 19.

Organised by Dubai Sports Council (DSC), the event’s opening match will see Real Madrid take on Al Nasr at 4.30pm on Friday.

“This tournament has a lot of expectations from the football fraternity of the country as we get to witness some of our own stars playing against the best from Europe,” Ali Omar, DSC’s Sports Development Department Director, told Gulf News.

“We are fortunate to have three of the biggest clubs in Europe participating this year. Some of the players who have played here in the past have gone on to enter the senior teams and even the national squads.

“One of the main objectives of this tournament is to provide us with a supply chain of young footballers who can break into the national or senior club squads.

“In the past we have seen some excellent talent coming through mainly because of this competition as our youngsters have felt more empowered by competing against tough European clubs. I am sure we will have a very successful competition this year too,” Omar said.

The preliminary round matches will be held every day from April 10 to 15. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on April 17. The final will be on April 19.

Entry is free and organisers have urged fans to turn up in numbers to support local players.
