Two new categories and an increase in the total cash allocation are among the additions to the 2016 Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award that will be presented in the first half of January next year.
Launched in May 2007 by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council (DSC), the annual awards honour individuals, teams and establishments in three categories — namely the UAE, the Arab world and international entries.
Last year’s award were won by Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, the wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Prince Nawaf Bin Faisal Bin Fahad Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia and the International Judo Federation (IJF).
The Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award, which is now part of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, is the first of its kind in the world - and is aimed at inspiring and awarding creativity in the field of sport.
The award is the largest in terms of value and categories, and the first-ever devoted to creativity in sports. In the seven years of the award so far, a total fund of Dh46 million has been utilised, and from this edition onwards, the total prize allocation for all categories has been increased from Dh7 million to Dh7.5 million.
The award has allocated Dh500,000 for the newly-included category for National Paralympic Committees, while setting up a special award for the best initiative in the sports creativity and scientific research segment.
After undergoing all due processes of accepting entries, and the judging, the awards will be presented to the individuals and sports bodies at a special function to be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) on January 11, 2017.
Khalid Ali Bin Zayed, General Secretary of the award, was joined by Dr Khalifa Al Shaali, board member of the Board of Trustees and Head of the Technical Committee, and Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Director of the award, in the presence of Saeed Hareb, General Secretary, Dubai Sports Council, for the announcement of the details at the Dubai Media Office on Monday.
“It is a matter of great pride for us to have the eighth edition of this award as it reflects the thoughts and philosophy of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad,” Al Zayed told Gulf News.
“It is important that we recognise and appreciate the creativity that goes into taking various sports to the next level. And I am sure this award has its place to play in the field of sport all around the world, and in the Arab world in particular,” he added.
The committee has also decided to have an extended deadline to accept entries and applications considering that sportspersons and bodies will be busy with the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Paralympic Games till the middle of September.
“Normally we accept entries till the end of August, but this year will be an exception. Yet another addition this time is that all applications will be received online only through the official award website (www.mbrawards.ae). We will not entertain any sort of paperwork from any applicant,” Al Rahma said.
