Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has warned Islam Slimani to adhere to the club’s fitness plan.

The Magpies are still sweating on the forward’s fitness since his arrival on deadline day of the January transfer window.

The Algeria international teamed up with the St James' Park outfit on loan from Leicester City  but has yet to make his first appearance for the club owing to injury.

He suffered a thigh muscle strain in a Leicester training and has been struggling with it ever since.

And, although, the attacker is eager to return back to the pitch, his manager has insisted that he has to stick, strictly, to the fitness plan put in place by the club.

“He [Slimani] has a plan, he has to follow that plan,” Benitez told NUFC TV.

“He is working with the fitness coach but he has to follow the plan.”

It is uncertain if the forward would be fit enough to play a part when Newcastle face Huddersfield Town on March 31 after their clash with Tottenham Hotspur this weekend was postponed.
