The President of Oman Football Association Sheikh Salim bin Said al Wahaibi has praised the big role played by the Qatari association in helping lift the FIFA ban on Kuwaiti football, after a struggle that went on for more than two years.

Speaking exclusively to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on Thursday, Wahaibi said that president of the Qatar and GCC Football Association HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al Thani made very positive moves that helped lift the ban.

He stressed that Qatar without a doubt had the biggest role in getting the ban lifted, after they coordinated with the Kuwaiti association which was working internally on the matter.

Qatar used its experience to end the crisis at the international level. Wahaibi offered his felicitations to the Kuwaiti association after FIFA lifted the ban on all footballing activities in the country, describing it as a positive step that was needed by Kuwaiti youth.

The Omani official said that he was a member of the committee which presented a report calling for an end to the ban and was following the development of the subject.

He expressed his delight over the FIFA decision, especially since Kuwait's participation in football competitions was long over due. Kuwait is a country which has a rich footballing history, having won the most number of Gulf Cup of Nations competitions.

On the suggestion made by President of Qatar Football Association on moving the upcoming Gulf Cup of Nations from Qatar to Kuwait, he said the Omani team will participate regardless of where it is held.

On why the number of Omani players in the Qatari league has declined over the past year, he said that the association is working on returning Omani football to its glory days and building a strong team. He also called on separating sports from politics. He expressed his hope that the Gulf Cup of Nations can return to just like what it was in the past.
