Turkey has announced its candidacy to host the European football Championship in 2024, joining Germany in the running.

The deadline for bids to European governing body UEFA is March 3.

"As Allah desires, we will submit Turkey's candidacy on March 2," Turkish Football Federation chief Yildirim Demiroren told a news conference on Wednesday.

"We believe that we deserve to get the tournament this time as a team, a board and a country."

Sports Minister Akif Cagatay Kilic said the application had the support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

Turkey had previously bid to host Euro 2016 but lost out to France. It mulled bidding for 2020 but interest in a failed Istanbul Olympic bid muddied the waters and UEFA decided to hold Euro 2020 across the continent.

A joint bid from Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway for 2024 is still possible before the deadline but its success is seen as unlikely by experts.

Security concerns in Turkey mean Germany remains the favourite to win the hosting of the world's third biggest sporting event.

UEFA will decide the hosts in September 2018.
