Manchester United: Van Persie drops bombshell with latest quotes

Robin van Persie has tried to put an end to the endless rumours surrounding his future at Manchester United by stating that he is extremely happy to the club and would be more than ready to commit for life.

Surprisingly, this statement comes just weeks after he indirectly questioned David Moyes’ tactics during the 2-0 defeat against Olympiakos. He appeared to suggest that Moyes’ tactics are not so great since other players appeared to get into his way.

It might have been a ploy to make people overlook the fact that he had a very poor match, but little did the Dutchman realise that he had started several rumours about his future.

The non-existent partnership between him and Wayne Rooney has also been discussed a lot. However, ahead of the derby against Liverpool, van Persie said that he was happy to commit to the club. According to Manchester United’s official site, he said:

“I don’t mind if my performances get dissected and people criticise what I’ve done on the pitch.

“They can talk about my game 24/7 for all I care… and a lot of those opinions and criticisms may actually be right. So I don’t mind that.

“The truth is I’m very happy here at this club. I signed for four years and I’d be delighted to stay even longer, beyond the next two years I have left on my contract. This is how I feel, although it’s not what has been suggested in the media.”

The 30-year-old still has a contract until 2016. Italian clubs – especially Juventus – were interested in him in the past. He may state that he feels happy at United, but a player of his experience will be aware that actions speak louder than words.

At least an effort to reignite the partnership with Rooney will go a long way into making people understand that he is happy at United.

Even if United are ready to sell van Persie in order to make a statement – just as they did with the sale of Ruud van Nistelrooy, it remains to be seen if van Persie will still be open to such a move after having earlier rejected the possibility to join the Italian champions. Given his age and fitness issues in the past, he is also unlikely to command a significant transfer fee.
