Cairo giants Zamalek saved their season by winning the 2017-18 Egyptian Cup title. The White Knights grabbed their 26th title in the history of the domestic cup competition on Tuesday (15 May 2018) defeating Smouha 5-4 on penalties in Alexandria after the regular time ended in a 1-1 draw.
Smouha took an early lead when striker Hossam Hassan capitalized on a defensive error to tap home Mohamed Hamdy Zaki's cross after five minutes. Hassan later turned from hero to villain when he was sent off after 70 minutes for receiving his second yellow card of the night.
Zamalek capitalized on the numerical advantage and equalized through DR Congo import Kabongo Kassongo four minutes from full time, to push the game into 30 minutes of extra time. There were no more goals, and that meant the final will be decided on penalties.
Abdullah Bakry missed the first kick for Smouha, which proved to be decisive as no other kicks were missed. Mahmoud Alaa, Tarek Hamed, Abdullah Gomaa, Hamdi Naguez and Youssef "Obama" Ibrahim scored for Zamalek, while Mahmoud Moaz, Yasser Ibrahim, Islam Saleh and Sayed Farid scored for Smouha.
Zamalek celebrated their 26th Egypt Cup title, ten short of record winners Al Ahly. They will now join Al Masry as Egypt's flagbearers in next season's Total CAF Confederation Cup.
