Speakers at a seminar held during the weekend in Damascus warned that Syria risks being economically marginalized if it does not embrace information and communication technology (ICT).
The seminar, which was organized by the Syrian Computer Society (SCC) and the Syrian-European Business Center (SEBC), focused on the role of ICT in the economic field, emphasizing how proper investment can advance e-commerce, the banking sector, and the economy as a whole.
Mohammad Jaza’irli, director of the SCC Scientific Committee, was quoted by the Daily Star as saying that “the internet revolution has become a daily bread for the people.”
A newcomer to Syria’s internet scene, Lahham added, “the world is divided in two parts: those who have information, and those who don’t. The latter’s international role becomes nothing but an awed spectator.”
He claimed that a move was underway in this part of the world to breach the divide, the daily added.
Syrian businessman Mohammad Haykal told the paper that “it took the radio 35 years to reach 50 million people, while the television made it in 16. The internet has reached 50 million in only five years.” – Albawaba.com
