This digest provides the stance of 11 presidential candidates on the Camp David Accord between Egypt and Israel.

Abul Ezz Al-Hariri: “It is an invalid international agreement because its basis is invalid. It puts Egypt in a position of submission and surrender and under the mercy of the Israeli enemy. It prevents the Egyptian army from being on its borders and this is an unbalanced situation.”

Ahmed Shafiq: “Some call for calling off the Camp David Accord and this is insane… It’s impossible to do that because we signed an accord the whole world witnessed.”

Hossam Khairallah: “The Camp David Accord expired five years after it was signed. What Egypt and Israel have now is a peace treaty and its terms may be adjusted if it will harm Egypt’s national security.”

Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh: “There are no eternal international agreements. Camp David will be put to the public again for them to decide whether the accord should be maintained, called off or amended.”

Abdallah Al-Asha’al: “The first appendix of the accord gives one of the parties or both of them the right to ask for amending some of its terms… I do not recommend calling off the accord but I will force Israel to respect it.”

Mohamed Selim Al-Awa: “The accord is a contract between Muslims and Jews. If they manipulate its terms, we will refer to a peaceful solution and ask for international intervention. If that does not work out, we are strong and we can use all methods to get our rights.”

Mohamed Morsi: “We will commit to all the agreements Egypt has signed with all countries including the Camp David Accord.”

Hisham Al-Bastawisi: “There are agreements that lead to creating peace between Egypt and Israel. And for this to come true, the accord must achieve a power balance and must make the Egyptian citizen feel satisfied. It should maintain Egypt’s sovereignty over Sinai which the accord has not done.”
