ABB has received an order for a new control center from the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) in the Sultanate of Oman. The contract is valued at approximately $17 million. The new control center will serve all the power plants and substations in the northern region of the Sultanate, including those to be built within the next four to five years.
This will ensure the more efficient monitoring of the power grid, contribute to a better utilization of the grid and minimize power failures and blackouts in the electricity supply. The order is also an important prerequisite for the deregulation of the electricity market in Oman.
MEW is responsible for power production as well as power transmission and distribution throughout the Sultanate. The control center is scheduled to enter into operation at the beginning of 2003.
The control center is based on an energy control system that is part of ABB’s Industrial IT (Information Technology) concept. ABB’s total undertaking for this project includes a new control room, new computer systems and a communications system for both data and voice transmission.
