ALBAWABA – In response to US President Donald Trump's latest tariffs, China has decided to launch an antitrust probe into Google.

China investigates Google

China stated initiating an investigation against Google, the American multinational corporation and technology company focusing on online advertising, search engine technology, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce, consumer electronics, and artificial intelligence (AI), over anti-monopoly practices.

This move comes in response to the latest tariff laws imposed by US President Donald Trump. Recently, Trump implemented new tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and 10% on China’s exports, claiming they are meant to protect the US economy and trade policies.

In retaliation, Canada and Mexico announced they would impose new tariffs on US imports, including steel, bourbon, and dairy products.

According to Google, China will begin the investigation over alleged violations of the country’s anti-monopoly law, the primary legal framework regulating competition in the People's Republic of China.

Other companies, including PVH Corp (the parent company of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger) and biotechnology firm Illumina Inc., are also joining Google, as China claims these companies are threatening the country's national security.

Additionally, in response to Trump’s new tariffs, China announced additional tariffs on select US imports.

The Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China stated that it will impose a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas imports from the US this month, along with a 10% tariff on American crude oil, farm equipment, and certain cars and trucks.
