Jordanian mobile network Fastlink has contracted Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) to install an overlay Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications system on its 900 MHz network. The total value of the GPRS/GSM contract is $29 million.

Motorola will deploy its Horizonsystems GSM infrastructure solutions to expand Fastlink's nationwide network. When fully installed, the system can accommodate approximately one million subscribers.

Motorola's GPRS radio network solution includes the Serving GPRS Support Node (SSGN), supplied by Motorola Computer Group, and the Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) from Cisco Systems. Motorola's GPRS radio network can be implemented over an existing GSM network with a software load and a packet control unit (PCU) addition, which can help protect an operator's investment.

Fastlink was launched in 1995 as a private shareholding company operating the first GSM cellular network in the Kingdom. The network is currently the largest mobile phone provider in the country. The GSM operator doubled its subscriber base and its infrastructure capabilities over the course of 2001 in terms of network capacity and technology deployment. — (menareport.com)
