City Centre Rotana Goes Dark for an Hour for a Brighter Future

City Centre Rotana Doha joined the international community in observing the Earth Hour on Saturday 24th March 2017. The international move aims to raise global awareness on climate change and energy consumption, as well as encourage Qatar’s population to contribute to the Earth’s sustainability.
A day before the event, City Centre Rotana Doha’s team programmed all TV screens in the hotel to display themed visuals to create more awareness about the earth hour. Moreover, a welcome letter was sent to all visitors in their rooms inviting them to take part in the hotel’s initiative and asking them to reduce their electricity usage between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm.
The hotel switched off all external façade lights in addition to reducing the use of interior lights in all its restaurants. Moreover, special earth hour cupcakes were prepared for this occasion and distributed to guests upon check-in/out.
To raise awareness about this Global Initiative for Environmental Conservation, the hotel launched a competition at its Instagram platform by creating a special hashtag for the occasion #CCRDEarthHour2018, where guests were asked to share their best Earth Hour moments at City Centre Rotana Doha.
Furthermore, City Centre Rotana Doha collaborated with Doha British School, where students crafted handmade lanterns from recyclable material compliant with the World-Wide Fund for Nature standards to replace the candles at Teatro restaurant.
On this occasion, Martin Kendall, General Manager of City Centre Rotana Doha said, “In line with the commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, we were glad to support this exceptional initiative that is observed worldwide. It is one of the most powerful environmental campaigns that has been instrumental in mobilizing global action on raising awareness about climate change and we are proud to be part of it.”
Earth Hour is a global initiative set by the World Wildlife Fund which started in one country in 2007. In 2018, this event took place in an unprecedented 180 countries and territories. Millions of individuals, businesses, governments and communities from around the globe come together to turn off the lights for one hour at 8:30 pm to show their support for the sustainability of the environment and to highlight the urgent need to address climate change and where iconic landmarks switch off their lights for one hour to show they care about the future of the planet.
