Maserati scores one-two overall at Monza in first race of GT2 European Series by Pirelli season
Maserati Corse has opened its 2026 season of the GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli with a bang. On the Italian track, the Trident took a one-two overall on Saturday. In Race 1, Antoine Potty (i4Race) crossed the finish line ahead of all his competitors in the Maserati GT2, followed by the pairing of Stefan Rosina and Gerhard Tweraser (LP Racing). A brilliant way to start the season in Maserati's centenary year in racing. It was a weekend to remember for Philippe Joseph Prette (LP Racing), who triumphed in the Masters category in both Races 1 and 2. Roberto Pampanini and Mauro Calamia (DINAMIC Motorsport) also took a double podium in Pro Am. Niccolò Pirri made his racing debut at Monza at the wheel of a Maserati, alongside Thomas Yu Lee (LP Racing); the Italian-American driver duo took fourth place in Pro Am.
Maserati Corse’s commitment to this championship is further strengthened by its appointment, for the second year running, as official car supplier of the GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS, with the Maserati GT2 Stradale and MCPURA assuming the roles of Safety Car and Leading Car respectively.
In Race 1 on Saturday, Maserati reaped very positive results in all categories. In Silver, at the starting line Belgium’s Potty defended the front row well to begin with, whereas Rosina overtook Njor very well. After a whirlwind of pit stops, the two Maseratis moved into first and second. Taking over from Rosina, Tweraser put up a tenacious defence against the assault of Hartling's Mercedes. As such, the two Maseratis crossed the finish line at the chequered flag ahead of all their competitors, for a one-two to remember. In Masters, Prette – 2025 and 2024 champion in the Am Class – dominated his category and returned to victory. In Pro Am, a decent placing for Pampanini and Calamia, who managed to take the third step on the podium. Also worth a mention is Thomas Yu Lee's pole position in Pro Am.
In the second race on Sunday, Prette pulled off another outstanding performance. Despite starting from the back at eleventh overall on the grid, in Race 2 he managed to recover to take a decent fifth placing overall, finishing ahead of everyone else in the Masters category. In Pro Am, Calamia went on the offensive after the race had started, but also had to defend himself. A regular pace gave the Calamia/Pampanini pairing the opportunity to climb up to third in Pro Am (sixth overall). Close behind them in the overall and category standings came Pirri and Yu Lee. Unfortunately, Potty and Tweraser/Rosina were forced to retire in the early stages of the race.
Vincent Biard, Head of Maserati Corse: “The first race weekend at Monza has served as immediate confirmation of the competitiveness and reliability of our Maserati GT2, with solid performance in all three categories this year. These results provide =continuity to our achievements in recent seasons. We’re satisfied with the car's behaviour throughout of the weekend, from the qualifiers to race management, where performance, driveability and consistency have once again proved to be fundamental strengths. This result takes on an even greater value in the year we are celebrating Maserati’s 100th anniversary in racing: a history built on the track and on innovation that continues to evolve, as also demonstrated by the MCXtrema shining forth in the paddock. But above all, it is a source of great pride for us to see teams and drivers express such an immediate feeling with our Maserati GT2: their trust and competitiveness right from the start are the most concrete confirmation we could have of the value of our project. The GT2 European Series is a fast-growing, increasingly competitive championship, as shown by there being over 20 cars on the grid. We strongly believe in its potential”.
To follow Monza, the calendar will continue with another four events on the circuits at Spa-Francorchamps (20-21 June), Misano (18-19 July), Zandvoort (19-20 September) and Portimão (17-18 October).
