Head of Qatar Computing Research Institute receives distinguished industry honour

Dr Ahmed Elmagarmid, Executive Director of Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), has been named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Dr Elmagarmid was cited for his contributions to database management systems.

ACM is the world’s largest and most prestigious organisation for researchers and practitioners in the field of computing. Each year, ACM recognises outstanding members who have made exceptional contributions to information technology, and whose work has generated advances in computer science and information systems, by naming them as Fellows. 

Dr Elmagarmid’s work in the application of database technology and cyber infrastructure to societal challenges is well known and often cited in both academia and industry. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and early in his career he received the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award from former US President Ronald Reagan. He is a well-published scientist, having authored six books and more than 180 papers that have been published in prestigious venues. 

As an ACM Fellow, Dr Elmagarmid joins a distinguished list of colleagues from the world’s leading universities, industries and research labs to whom the ACM and its members look for guidance and leadership as the world of information technology evolves. 

ACM will formally recognise Dr Elmagarmid and all the 2012 Fellows at its annual Awards Banquet on 5 June, 2013, in San Francisco.
