As part of its community oriented initiatives and the drive to play a pivotal role in Oman’s socioeconomic development, Sohar International extended support to the Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children in the Wilayat of Dhank within the Governorate of al Dhahirah. Sohar International’s donation to the Association will assist in equipping a speech therapy room to best serve the children of the Association.

Following a visit to the association in Dhank and meeting its members led by Ms Muhra Al Saidi, Mr Khalil Salim Al Hedaifi, Chief Retail Banking Officer, Sohar International explained that Supporting civic society associations is an integral part of the bank’s Sohar Al Atta’ Social Responsibility program, and that such initiatives do not only help the associations provide more support to their members, but also to the community securing a brighter and more prosperous future for Oman. Mr Khalil elaborated, “An estimated 500 million people worldwide have visual, hearing, mobility or cognitive impairments. While challenges are part of everyone’s journey of development, differently-abled children require a little help in realizing their growth. It is not only the responsibility of parents, but also that of the community as a whole by empowering them to realize their full potential and play their vital role in the development of the Sultanate. By supporting the Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children and many others, Sohar International translates our belief in inclusiveness and will continue to work to facilitate a better life for the differently abled communities in the Sultanate.”

Sohar International has been closely associated with different branches of the Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children since 2014. Earlier investments have provided financial support to a range of initiatives that not only support the general expenses of the branch but aid the provision of educational and structural material.

HH Sayyida Hujaija Al Said, President of the Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children commented, “We remain grateful to Sohar International for their consistent spirit of social solidarity which helps us to provide differently-abled children the very best in terms of facilities and care. This is an admirable illustration of socially responsible organisations that foster interaction within the Omani society, providing meaningful financial support to various underprivileged segments in the community.”

The Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children serves children from the ages of 6 to 14; providing them comprehensive support through education; mental health well-being; physical development; and academic services. The aim of the Association is to reach every disabled Omani child; giving them an opportunity to explore and enjoy life whilst integrating them back into the community. The Centre also supports scientific studies and research into causes of disability.

Sohar International’s comprehensive social outreach programme ‘Sohar Al Atta’ collaborates with many local entities in a similar manner, with initiatives directed towards a broad range of causes; including support for childcare centres, as well as organisations devoted to disability and other philanthropic missions. Sohar Al Atta support has benefitted more than 30 organisations to-date, working to ensure that its contributions are carefully planned in order to reach the maximum number of people possible as it inspires meaningful change.
