Ruler of Ajman, Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuami has officially enacted the first ever Sewer Law in the Emirate in an official ceremony. The Sewer Law is intended to commence the implementation of a $140 million sewerage treatment system, said a press release.

The Sewer Law has formally established the creation of the concession company that will build, operate and manage the system for 25 years. This new private company will be known as the “Ajman Sewerage Company Limited” and is a partnership between the Government of Ajman and two world leaders in the wastewater business, Thames Water and Black and Veatch.

One of the first tasks for the company will be to embark on a comprehensive census and registration exercise to identify every property in the Emirate of Ajman and its owner and occupier, if different from the owner. This process will be conducted pursuant to the provisions of the Sewer Law and is expected to commence in the coming weeks and will be the subject of a public announcement.

The Sewer Law stipulates that every property owner in Ajman must register his or her property with the Ajman Sewerage. Each owner of a property is required by the Sewer Law to contribute to the development of the infrastructure of the Emirate and the construction of the proposed efficient sewerage system by payment to the company of a compulsory connection fee. The fee amount will depend on the size of the individual property and some other considerations.

The $140 million modernization program will involve building a state of the art sewerage treatment plant in Ajman, more than 15 individual pumping stations and laying over 200 kilometers of pipelines to connect over 40,000 individual properties across the Emirate to the system.

It will take four years to complete the massive project with the main treatment plant expected to open in 2005. Treated water from the plant will be used for irrigation and helping the City to become green in addition to other commercial and environmental purposes within the Emirate. — (menareport.com)
