The completed first phase of Dubai’s Dh12 billion Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will be launched on October 22, the chief of the emirate’s utility company announced on Thursday.

The first phase will generate 13MW of solar energy, which will be directly linked to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (Dewa) grid.

“Dewa is looking forward to another great achievement with the launch of the first phase of the Solar Park on October 22,” Dewa MD and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said at a press conference to announce the first World Green Economy Summit which will be held in Dubai on April 15 and 16 next year.

“This project (the solar park) is gigantic in scope and represents a new knowledge and engineering landmark, which will provide us with clean renewable energy and promote our relentless efforts to explore more promising opportunities,” Al Tayer said.

Waleed Salman, executive vice-president for Strategy and Business Development at Dewa, told Khaleej Times that the authority had recently floated a tender for engineering consultancy services for a substation in the park and the details of the next phase of the project would be announced at the inauguration of the first phase.

Salman, who is also the chairman of Dubai Green Economy Partnership, said His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, will inaugurate the project and announce the details of the power production in the next phase. Located at Seih Al Dahal in Dubai, the park has a planned capacity of 1,000MW on final completion by 2030.

On completion, the park will comprise a research and development centre, an educational institute, a museum of technology, exhibitions to help students in training and be aware of the components of this project, which is the first and largest one of its kind in the region.
