Syria’s main port of Lattakia reported a wide increase in last year’s activities compared with 2003, when productivity jumped by 24,16 %, Director General of the port Wednesday said.
"Commodities volume has reached 6,043,738 tons in 2004 with one million ton rise compared to last year. This in turn has led to increase the port returns from SP 1 billion and 076,324,658 in 2003 to SP 1 billion 849,163,900 with a 71% increase," Director General of the port company Malek Sheikh Yassin said, according to SANA.
Travelers coming and going through the port climbed from 6,776 to 16,425 with an increase of 142,4 percent and ships figure has mounted to 1375 with an increase of 14%.
Yassin said the port would play a significant role in serving commodities and equipments coming into Syria from Europe and Iraq, noting that after the singing of the partnership accord between Syria and the EU, trade exchange would be activated to contribute in the port efficiency.
