The U.S. will recognize Syrian opposition offices in the United States as foreign diplomatic missions, officials said Monday, according to AFP.
The news comes as opposition chief Ahmad Jarba prepares for high level talks.
This new distinction seeks “to empower the Syrian moderate opposition and bolster its efforts to assist people who need help inside Syria,” a senior member of the Obama administration told AFP.
Syria is embroiled in a three-year-long civil war that has killed over 150,000 people and displaced millions.
